LIBRARY USES GAMING TO EMPOWER CAPE TOWN YOUTH
In an effort to keep children off the streets, the City of Cape Town’s library and information services have launched a gaming project that uses PlayStation and Xbox consoles to attract young people to the library.
The project, which began in January 2023, allows library users to play video games and socialise in a safe and fun environment. The games are selected to promote learning, social interaction, and cognitive development, with some featuring puzzles, quizzes, and educational content.
The pilot project is currently being run at the Mfuleni and Strandfontein libraries, and it has already proven to be popular among children and young adults in the area. The library has seen a significant increase in the number of young people visiting and using the facilities, as well as improved behaviour and socialisation skills among regular users.
Library officials hope that the project will continue to grow and expand to other libraries throughout the city, providing a safe and engaging space for young people to learn and socialise.
